Specifications of Chlorocresol BP Ph Eur Grade Show/Hide Details
Specifications of Chlorocresol BP Ph Eur Grade:
C7H7ClO --- 142.6 --- CAS 59-50-7
Action and use: Antiseptic; antimicrobial preservative.DEFINITION
4-Chloro-3-methylphenol.
Content: 98.0 per cent to 101.0 per cent.CHARACTERS
Appearance: White or almost white, crystalline powder or compacted crystalline masses supplied as pellets or colourless or white crystals.
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water, very soluble in ethanol (96 per cent), freely soluble in fatty oils. It dissolves in solutions of alkali hydroxides.IDENTIFICATION
A. Melting point: 64C to 67C.
B. To 0.1 g add 0.2 mL of benzoyl chloride and 0.5 mL of dilute sodium hydroxide solution. Shake vigorously until a white, crystalline precipitate is formed. Add 5 mL of water and filter. The precipitate, recrystallised from 5 mL of methanol and dried at 70C, melts at 85C to 88C.
C. To 5 mL of solution S (see Tests) add 0.1 mL of ferric chloride solution. A bluish colour is produced.TESTS
Solution S: To 3.0 g, finely powdered, add 60 mL of carbon dioxide-free water, shake for 2 min and filter.
Appearance of solution: The solution is clear and not more intensely coloured than reference solution.
Dissolve 1.25 g in ethanol (96 per cent) and dilute to 25 mL with the same solvent.
Acidity: To 10 mL of solution S add 0.1 mL of methyl red solution. The solution is orange or red. Not more than 0.2 mL of 0.01 M sodium hydroxide is required to produce a pure yellow colour.
Related substances: To pass the test by gas chromatography.
Limits:
— unspecified impurities: for each impurity, maximum 0.10 per cent;
— total: maximum 1 per cent;
— disregard limit: the area of the principal peak in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution (0.05 per cent).
Non-volatile matter: Maximum 0.1 per cent.
Evaporate 2.0 g to dryness on a water-bath and dry the residue at 100-105C. The residue weighs not more than 2 mg.

Specifications of Chlorocresol USP NF Grade:
C7H7ClO --- 142.58
Phenol, 4-chloro-3-methyl-;
4-Chloro-m-cresol --- CAS 59-50-7DEFINITION
Chlorocresol contains NLT 99.0% and NMT 101.0% of C7H7ClO (4-chloro-3-methylphenol).IDENTIFICATION
A.
Sample solution: Dissolve 40 mg of Chlorocresol in 10 mL of water.
Analysis: Add 1 drop of ferric chloride TS to the Sample solution.
Acceptance criteria: A blue color develops.
B.
Sample: 50 mg
Analysis: Transfer the Sample to a crucible, add 500 mg of anhydrous sodium carbonate, and mix. Heat the mixture until fused. Cool, add 5 mL of water, and boil. Acidify with 1 mL of nitric acid, filter, and add 1 mL of silver nitrate TS to the filtrate.
Acceptance criteria: A white precipitate is formed.Melting Range or Temperature: 63C –66C
Limit of Nonvolatile Residue:
Sample: 1.0 g
Analysis: Heat the Sample in a tared crucible on a steam bath until it has evaporated, and dry the residue at 105° for 1 h.
Acceptance criteria: NMT 0.1%
Completeness of Solution:
Sample: 1 g
Analysis: Transfer the Sample to a test tube, add 0.4 mL of alcohol, and shake.
Acceptance criteria: The solution is complete.
Packaging and Storage: Preserve in tight, light-resistant containers.
