Action and use: Excipient.DEFINITION
Triethyl 2-hydroxypropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylate.
Content: 98.5 per cent to 101.0 per cent (anhydrous substance).CHARACTERS
Appearance: Clear, viscous, colourless or almost colourless, hygroscopic liquid.
Solubility: Soluble in water, miscible with ethanol (96 per cent), slightly soluble in fatty oils.IDENTIFICATION

A. Refractive index (see Tests).
B. Infrared absorption spectrophotometry.
Comparison Ph. Eur. reference spectrum of triethyl citrate.
C. It gives the reaction of esters.
D. To 0.5 mL add 5 mL of ethanol (96 per cent) and 4 mL of dilute sodium hydroxide solution. Boil under reflux for about 10 min. 2 mL of the solution gives the reaction of citrates.TESTS
Appearance: The substance to be examined is clear and not more intensely coloured than reference solution
Acidity: Dilute 10 g with 10 mL of previously neutralised ethanol (96 per cent), add 0.5 mL of bromothymol blue solution. Not more than 0.3 mL of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide is required to change the colour of the indicator to blue.
Refractive index: 1.440 to 1.446.
Related substances: To pass the test by Gas chromatography.
Limits:
-any impurity: for each impurity, maximum 0.2 per cent;
-total: maximum 0.5 per cent;
-disregard limit: 0.04 per cent.
Water: Maximum 0.25 per cent, determined on 1.000 g.
Sulfated ash: Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 1.0 g.

Acceptance criteria: 99.0% - 100.5% on the anhydrous basisSpecific Gravity: 1.135 - 1.139
Refractive Index: 1.439 - 1.441
Acidity:
Neutralized isopropyl alcohol: To a suitable quantity of isopropyl alcohol add 2 - 3 drops of bromothymol blue and just sufficient 0.10 N sodium hydroxide dropwise to produce a faint blue color. [Note: Prepare Neutralized isopropyl alcohol just prior to use.]
Sample solution: 32.0 g of Triethyl Citrate in 30 mL of Neutralized isopropyl alcohol
Analysis: Add bromothymol blue. Titrate with 0.10 N sodium hydroxide to a faint blue endpoint.
Acceptance criteria: NMT 1.0 mL of 0.10 N sodium hydroxide is required.
Water Determination: NMT 0.25%

Triethyl Citrate occurs as a practically colorless, oily liquid. It is slightly soluble in water but is miscible with alcohol and with ether.
Function: Solvent.REQUIREMENTS
Assay: Not less than 99.0% and not more than 100.5% of C12H20O7, calculated on the anhydrous basis.
Acidity: (as citric acid) Not more than 0.02%.
Lead: Not more than 2 mg/kg.
Refractive Index: Between 1.439 and 1.443 at 25C; or between 1.440 and 1.444 at 20C.
Specific Gravity: Between 1.135 and 1.139 at 25C.
Water: Not more than 0.25%.
