Specifications of Dimethyl Sulfoxide or DMSO BP Ph Eur Show/Hide Details
Specifications of Dimethyl Sulfoxide BP Ph Eur Grade:
C2H6OS --- 78.1 --- 67-68-5
Action and use: Pharmaceutical solvent; excipient.
When dimethyl sulphoxide is demanded, Dimethyl Sulfoxide shall be supplied.DEFINITION
Sulfinylbismethane.CHARACTERS
Appearance: Colourless liquid or colourless crystals, hygroscopic.
Solubility: Miscible with water and with ethanol (96 per cent).IDENTIFICATION
First identification: C
Second identification: A, B, D
A. Relative density.
B. Refractive index.
C. Infrared absorption spectrophotometry.
Comparison dimethyl sulfoxide CRS.
D. Dissolve 50 mg of nickel chloride in 5 mL of the substance to be examined. The solution is greenish-yellow. Heat in a water-bath at 50C. The colour changes to green or bluish-green. Cool. The colour changes to greenish-yellow.TESTS
Acidity: Dissolve 50.0 g in 100 mL of carbon dioxide-free water. Add 0.1 mL of phenolphthalein solution. Not more than 5.0 mL of 0.01 M sodium hydroxide is required to produce a pink colour.
Relative density: 1.100 to 1.104.
Refractive index: 1.478 to 1.480.
Freezing point: Minimum 18.3C.
Absorbance: Purge with nitrogen for 15 min. The absorbance, measured using water as the compensation liquid, is not more than 0.30 at 275 nm and not more than 0.20 at both 285 nm and 295 nm. Examined between 270 nm and 350 nm, the substance to be examined shows no absorption maximum.
Related substances: To pass the test by Gas chromatography.
Water: Maximum 0.2 per cent, determined on 10.0 g.
Specifications of Dimethyl Sulfoxide or DMSO USP Show/Hide Details
Specifications of Dimethyl Sulfoxide DMSO USP Grade:
C2H6OS -- 78.13
Methane, sulfinylbis-.
Methyl sulfoxide --- CAS 67-68-5.Dimethyl Sulfoxide contains not less than 99.9 percent of C2H6OS, calculated on the anhydrous basis.
Packaging and storage: Preserve in tight, light-resistant containers.
Identification:
A: Infrared Absorption.
B: Add 1.5 mL cautiously and dropwise to 2.5 mL of hydriodic acid in a test tube cooled in ice. Filter the mixture rapidly and collect the precipitate. Dry the precipitate in vacuum: a deep violet, crystalline solid is obtained, and it is soluble in chloroform, yielding a red solution.
Specific gravity: between 1.095 and 1.101.
Refractive index: between 1.4755 and 1.4775.
Acidity: Dissolve 50.0 g in 100 mL of water and add phenolphthalein. If the solution remains colorless, titrate with 0.01 N sodium hydroxide until a pink color appears: not more than 5.0 mL of 0.01 N sodium hydroxide is consumed.
Water Determination: not more than 0.1%. [ note— Weigh and transfer the test specimen in an environment of low humidity to minimize absorption of atmospheric water.]
Ultraviolet absorbance: Maintain Dimethyl Sulfoxide in a water bath at a temperature of less than 20C [note— Do not freeze.], and purge with dry nitrogen for 30 minutes. Record the UV absorption spectrum between 270 and 350 nm in a 1-cm cell, using water as the blank: the spectrum is smooth with no absorption maxima; the absorbance at 275 nm is not more than 0.20, and the absorbance ratios, A 285 / A 275 and A 295 / A 275, at the wavelengths indicated by the subscripts, are not more than 0.65 and 0.45, respectively.
Limit of nonvolatile residue: Evaporate about 100.0 g to dryness in a tared, preconditioned dish on a hot plate under a suitable fume hood. Evaporate gently so boiling does not occur. The weight of the residue does not exceed 0.01%.
Related compounds: To pass the test by chromatography --- not more than 0.1% of total impurities is found.
