Aluminium Sulphate BP Ph Eur Grade
DEFINITION
Aluminium sulphate contains not less than 51.0 per cent and not more than the equivalent of 59.0 percent of Al2(SO4)3. It contains a variable quantity of water of crystallization.CHARACTERS
Colourless, lustrous crystals or crystalline masses, soluble in cold water, freely soluble in hot water, practically insoluble in alcohol.IDENTIFICATION
A. Solution S (see Tests) gives reaction of sulphates.
B. Solution S gives the reaction of aluminium.TESTS
Solution S: Dissolve 2.5 g in water R and dilute to 50 ml with the same solvent.
Appearance of solution: Solution S is not more opalescent than reference suspension III and is colourless.
pH: The pH of the solution is 2.5 to 4.0.
Alkali and alkaline-earth metals: To 20 ml of solution S add 100 ml of water, heat and add 0.1 ml of methyl red solution. Add dilute ammonia until the colour of the indicator changes to yellow. Dilute to 150 ml with water, heat to boiling and filter. Evaporate 75 ml of the filtrate to dryness on a water-bath and ignite. The residue weighs not more than 2 mg (0.4 per cent).
Ammonium: 0.4 ml of solution S diluted to 14 ml with water complies with the limit test for ammonium (500 ppm).
Iron: 2 ml of solution S diluted to 10 ml with water complies with the limit test for iron (100 ppm).
Heavy metals: Dilute 8 ml of solution S to 20 ml with water. 12 ml of the solution complies with limit test A for heavy metals (50 ppm).

Aluminum Sulfate USP Grade
Al2(SO4)3·xH2O (anhydrous) 342.15
Sulfuric acid, aluminum salt (3:2), hydrate.
Aluminum sulfate (2:3) hydrate
Anhydrous 342.16.Aluminum Sulfate contains not less than 54.0 percent and not more than 59.0 percent of Al2(SO4)3. It contains a varying amount of water of crystallization.
Identification: A solution (1 in 10) responds to the tests for Aluminum and for Sulfate.
pH: not less than 2.9, in a solution (1 in 20).
Water: not less than 41.0% and not more than 46.0%.
Heavy metals: The limit is 20 µg per g.
Limit of alkalies and alkaline earths: To a boiling solution of 1.0 g in 150 mL of water add a few drops of methyl red TS and then add 6 N ammonium hydroxide just until the color of the solution changes to a distinct yellow. Add hot water to restore the volume to 150 mL, and filter while hot. Evaporate 75 mL of the filtrate to dryness, and ignite to constant weight: not more than 2 mg of residue remains (0.4%).
Limit of ammonium salts: Heat 1 g with 10 mL of 1 N sodium hydroxide on a steam bath for 1 minute: the odor of ammonia is not perceptible.
Iron: To 20 mL of a solution (1 in 150) add 0.3 mL of potassium ferrocyanide TS: no blue color is produced immediately.
Organic volatile impurities: meets the requirements.

Al2(SO4)3 Formula wt, anhydrous 342.14
Al2(SO4)3·18H2O Formula wt, octadecahydrate 666.41
INS: 520 CAS: anhydrous [CAS 10043-01-3]
CAS: octadecahydrate [CAS 7784-31-8]DESCRIPTION
Aluminum Sulfate occurs as a white powder, as shining plates, or as crystalline fragments. It is anhydrous or contains 18 molecules of water of crystallization. Because of efflorescence, the hydrate may have a composition approximating the formula Al2(SO4)3·14H2O. One gram of the hydrate dissolves in about 2 mL of water. The anhydrous approaches the same solubility, but the rate of solution is so slow that it initially appears to be relatively insoluble. The pH of a 1:20 aqueous solution is 2.9 or above.REQUIREMENTS
Identification: A 1:10 aqueous solution gives positive tests for Aluminum and for Sulfate.
Assay Anhydrous: Not less than 99.5% of Al2(SO4)3, calculated on the ignited basis.
Octadecahydrate: Not less than 99.5% and not more than 114.0% of Al2(SO4)3·18H2O, corresponding to not more than approximately 101.7% of Al2(SO4)3·14H2O.
Alkalies and Alkaline Earths: Passes test (about 0.4%).
Ammonium Salts: Passes test.
Fluoride: Not more than 0.003%.
Lead: Not more than 3 mg/kg.
Loss on Ignition Anhydrous: Not more than 5%.
Note: This Requirement does not apply to Al2(SO4)3·18H2O.
Selenium: Not more than 0.003%.
