Specifications of Aluminium Sodium Silicate BP Ph Eur:
DEFINITION
Silicic acid aluminium sodium salt of synthetic origin.
Content:
- aluminium (Al; Mr 26.98): 2.7 per cent to 7.9 per cent (dried substance);
- sodium (Na; Mr 22.99): 3.7 per cent to 6.3 per cent (dried substance).CHARACTERS
Appearance: White or almost white, fine, light, amorphous powder.
Solubility: Practically insoluble in water and in organic solvents.IDENTIFICATION
A. Transfer 1.0 g to a 100 mL beaker and add 10 mL of dilute hydrochloric acid. Mix, cover with a watch glass and boil for 15 min. Allow to cool to room temperature, mix and centrifuge the solution. 2 mL of the supernatant gives the reaction of aluminium.
B. 2 mL of the supernatant obtained in identification test A gives reaction of sodium.
C. 0.2 g gives the reaction of silicates.TESTS
pH: 9.5 to 11.5.
Disperse 5.0 g in 100 mL of carbon dioxide-free water.
Arsenic: Maximum 3 ppm.
Lead: Maximum 5 ppm.
Atomic absorption spectrometry: To pass the test.
Loss on drying: Maximum 8.0 per cent, determined on 1.000 g by drying in an oven at 105C for 4 h.
Loss on ignition: 5.0 per cent to 11.0 per cent (dried substance), determined on 1.000 g by ignition in a platinum crucible to constant mass at 1000 ± 25C.
Microbial contamination:
TAMC: acceptance criterion 1000 CFU/g.
TYMC: acceptance criterion 100 CFU/g.
Absence of Escherichia coli.

Specifications of Sodium Aluminosilicate FCC Food Grade:
DESCRIPTION
Sodium Silicoaluminate
INS: 554 CAS 1344-00-9
Sodium Aluminosilicate occurs as a fine, white, amorphous powder, or as beads. It is a series of hydrated sodium aluminum silicates having Na2O:Al2O3:SiO2 molar ratios of approximately 1:1:13, respectively. It is insoluble in water and in alcohol and other organic solvents, but at 80C to 100C, it is partially soluble in strong acids and solutions of alkali hydroxides.
Function: Anticaking agent.REQUIREMENTS
Identification:
A. Mix 500 mg of sample with 2.5 g of anhydrous potassium carbonate and heat the mixture in a platinum or nickel crucible until it melts completely. Cool, add 5 mL of water, and allow to stand for 3 min. Heat the bottom of the crucible gently, detach the melt, and transfer it into a beaker with the aid of about 50 mL of water. Gradually add hydrochloric acid until no effervescence is observed, add 10 mL more of the acid, and evaporate to dryness on a steam bath. Cool, add 20 mL of water, boil, and filter through ash-free filter paper. An insoluble residue of silica remains. Retain the filtrate for Identification Test B.
Caution: Handle hydrofluoric acid in an appropriate fume hood.
Transfer the gelatinous residue to a platinum dish, and cautiously add 5 mL of hydrofluoric acid. The precipitate dissolves. (If it does not dissolve, repeat the treatment with hydrofluoric acid.) Heat, and introduce a glass stirring rod with a drop of water on the tip into the resulting vapors. The drop becomes turbid.
B. Portions of the filtrate obtained in Identification Test A give positive tests for Aluminum and for Sodium.Assay:
Silicon Dioxide Not less than 66.0% and not more than 76.0% of SiO2 after drying.
Aluminum Oxide Not less than 9.0% and not more than 13.0% of Al2O3 after drying.
Sodium Oxide Not less than 4.0% and not more than 7.0% of Na2O after drying.
Lead: Not more than 5 mg/kg.
Loss on Drying: Not more than 8.0%.
Loss on Ignition: Between 8.0% and 13.0% after drying.
pH: (20% slurry) Between 6.5 and 10.5.
